Martha Engber Workshop

Filed under: Musings — Joanne @ 5:39 pm

The Mt. Diablo Branch of the California Writers Club hosted a workshop by Martha Engber yesterday.  She was by far the best speaker I’ve ever heard discuss character development.  I recommend your visiting her website, www.MarthaEngber.com, and/or her blog, www.MarthaEngber.blogspot.com.

The goal of Martha’s book, Growing Great Characters From the Ground Up, is to help writers learn “to grow a great character from one specific detail.”  She explained this “defining detail shows  … the basic internal rule by which your character lives and from which his/her external actions stem.”  I haven’t been this excited since I was a kid awaiting Christmas and can hardly wait to sit down to my manuscript-in-progress to apply what I learned!

Thank you, Martha, for an entertaining morning from which I will reap benefits well into the future.
